Sustainability in Marketing: from Mumbrella360

This month, I had the pleasure of presenting at the Mumbrella360 conference in Sydney, connecting with the marketing and advertising community. The message was clear: sustainability is no longer a nice-to-have. It is the future of smart, credible, and profitable marketing.

When companies embed sustainability in their strategy, they gain three major advantages: they future-proof their brand, strengthen customer loyalty, and improve operational efficiency. Still, many businesses hesitate. The fear of backlash, uncertainty around regulations, or the temptation of quick fixes often hold them back. So how to get started?

Start with the Basics: Avoid Greenwashing

Greenwashing is more than a regulatory risk of fines. It can do lasting damage to your brand. Today’s customers, investors, and employees are savvy and can quickly spot claims that lack substance. The brands that stand out are those who match their messaging with credible action, measurable outcomes, and a commitment to transparency. To get started:

  • Educate yourself on your company’s sustainability report, audience expectations, and current local regulations.
  • Audit your current claims for accuracy and transparency (go deep!) and prioritize the negative impacts for improvement.
  • Engage external stakeholders to understand their priorities, and even better, co-create campaigns with them. Imagine the new perspectives!

Then, Go Further: Make Your Marketing More Sustainable

One of my key messages at Mumbrella360 was that no matter your role (yes, creative, strategist, media buyer, and brand leads) you can take meaningful steps toward more sustainable marketing. You don’t need a top-down ESG directive to get started.

Some practical places to begin:

Digital Decarbonization
Reduce emissions by working with low-carbon vendors, streamlining your ad tech stack, and improving media efficiency. Lower invalid traffic, reduce ad fraud, and compress file sizes where possible. It improves ROI too.

Sustainable Events
From venue selection to swag, every event decision has impact. Choose consciously and engage vendors, partners, and attendees in the sustainability process.

Regenerative Messaging
Move beyond “do less harm.” Use your brand voice to inspire shared responsibility. Collaborate with partners and customers to promote inclusive, positive impact through your messaging.

Data-Driven Partnerships
Choose partners who align with your ESG values and invest in diverse, inclusive media. Ensure your actions are tracked and measurable.

Practical Actions to Start Today

Oh yes, all good, but the hardest part is getting started. So here’s a plan to help you take the first step:

  1. State Your Intentions
Put a stake in the ground. Share your sustainability goals with your team and partners, and identify the areas where you can drive the most immediate impact.
  2. Track and Measure
Audit the carbon and social impact of your current campaigns. Ask vendors for their sustainability data. Bring transparency into every room you’re in.
  3. Communicate and Adapt
Use your insights to inform smarter decisions. Share updates, adjust your plans, and include others in your progress. It’s not about perfection – it’s about momentum.
