Creating more sustainable events starts with you. YOU can make a difference.
Why? Because it is relevant, it matters and your attendees care.
You’re the leader.
But how to get started? First, commit yourself. Put that stake in the ground to lead this change.
Sounds easy to just state an intention, but then what? It’s common to get paralyzed because you ‘don’t know everything’ or ‘may not get it all right.’ That is ok! This is a journey, with no right or wrong way to start. Simply begin by thinking about what changes you can realistically make, what has local relevance, and what aligns to your company or product. No one single model fits all, nor can you cover everything, but you can have outlined intentions.
Measure it.
Think about this.
- “We have 50% less plastic than last year.”
That is impactful.
But, how about this:
- “On this day, we collected 100 plastic bottles that people used here. And next year, we will have 0 plastic bottles.”
Now that is massive!
Both examples have stated measurable intentions to confirm your environmental goals for an event.
Finally, Communicate!
Don’t underestimate the power of stating, measuring, and communicating. People LOVE goals and this process provides a sense of progress on the impact overall. You should communicate during your planning with your venue, agency, contractors, and stakeholders. Don’t stress everyone out so much that they’ll be kicked out if they accidentally bring a plastic lid on their to-go coffee. Communicate to celebrate the start of a journey to make humble, yet authentic progress. You will soon see how proud others will be to follow your lead.
- Lead with Stated Intentions.
- Gather Input, Confirm Goals & Measurement.
- Communicate Intentions, Goals, Results!
It is a journey. Once you take the first step, there is no stopping you and the impact you can make!
